David is anointed king of Judah, while Saul’s son Ish-bosheth struggles to unite the northern tribes of Israel. A civil war ensues, dividing the nation. Abner, a key ally of Saul’s son, later defects to David, but Joab, one of David’s men, kills him out of revenge. Chaos builds as Ish-bosheth is murdered by his own men, leaving David to bring order with wisdom and fairness.
